After earning his podiatry degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, in Des Moines, Iowa in 1991, Dr. Spal entered the podiatric medical profession to explore his passion for helping people and representing the podiatric community in an exceptional way. Dr. Spal completed
his residency program at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in East Orange, New Jersey, where he trained under the tutelage of Drs. Herman Tax and Joseph Greene. Currently, Dr. Spal is a self-employed podiatric physician who focuses on providing podiatric services to those who are non-ambulatory.
During Dr. Spal’s hiatus from podiatry school, he volunteered his services with the United States Public Health Services and traveled to Barrow, Alaska where he worked in the pharmacy and was able to speak with the Native Americans about basic foot care at their various clinics throughout Alaska.
Dr. Spal also did a one- month externship at the Gillis W. Long Hansen’s Disease Center, Carville, Louisiana where he assisted the surgeons in providing care to the Leprosy patients who had foot care issues. It was there, that Dr. Spal also met the then Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop who was there expressing his gratitude for the services provided by the podiatric surgeons to the Leprosy patients at the Gillis W. Long Hansen’s Disease Center.
Dr. Mark Bruce Spal is an established and highly skilled podiatric physician with over twenty-five years of experience in primary podiatric care, and is Board Certified in Diabetic Foot Wounds and Therapeutic Footwear since 1998 as well as holding Board Certification in Primary Podiatric Care since 1996. Dr. Spal currently is a case reviewer for the ABMSP for all graduating podiatry students who wish to join the board. Dr. Spal is also a member of the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society and the American Podiatric Medical Association.
He is well regarded throughout the northern New Jersey community, earning numerous accolades for his quality and patient-centered care. In 2016, Dr. Spal was selected as an honored member of Trademark Who’s Who Top Doctors Honor’s Edition, “FOR HE HAD A DREAM AND SET OUT TO ACHIEVE IT AND SUCCEEDED”.
Dr. Spal is very honored and proud of his new appointment as a Board of Director member of the ABMSP. He takes this opportunity very seriously and hopes to continue the boards inspiration and dedication of a podiatric profession that will flourish and obtain the respect and support that the ABMSP deserves.
